The Water Towers
The Water Towers are a historical and architectural landmark in Budrio. Built in 1912, they collected spring water from about ten kilometers south and supplied the town’s homes via gravity—a powerful symbol of a community whose very existence is tied to land reclamation and a deep connection to the element of water.
In 2004, the plan to revitalize the abandoned complex won the prestigious “Centocittà” competition. This initiative, promoted by the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation and conceived by Renzo Piano, aims to encourage the creative repurposing of public buildings in historic city centers.
Located on the edge of Budrio’s historic center, with the main entrance now facing Piazzetta Fabrizio de André, the complex spans a gross area of 2,500 square meters (27,000 sq ft). The redevelopment involved constructing a third tower to link the two original octagonal structures, along with a new adjacent building. The restoration process focused on stripping away unnecessary technical elements, instead highlighting the open spaces and utilizing raw materials and industrial finishes.
The Octagonal Hall, situated in the oldest tower, is renowned for its outstanding acoustics, making it a prime location for recording sessions and concerts. A unique feature is the recovered collection tank in the basement: despite being below street level, it is surprisingly bright thanks to a fully glazed wall and maintains its original finishes. The terraces provide versatile outdoor areas for various activities, featuring both circular and rectangular shapes. The complex also offers ample exhibition space: one large hall spanning the full length of the ground floor, and two separate spaces in the basement, the second of which is distinctively housed within the original round tank.
